Experiment. Collect fabric and wallpaper samples and try them out together until you are happy with your choices.Be instinctive. If you think something may work try it.
Photograph patterns together. When you see something isolated in photograph form it can fine-tune your sense of what works and doesn't.
Pattern Scale. Use large-scale and small-scale patterns as partners. You can pick out a small detail in a large pattern and draw that out in the small-scale pattern.
Space Scale. Use a large patterned wallpaper in a small space to add impact. Use a large-scale pattern on curtains to draw the eye.
Texture. Texture can lift a scheme and alter your perception of a pattern.
Stripes. Stripes can be used to draw the eye. Use vertical stripes to draw the eye along and around the room. Use vertical stripes to add height to a room.
Clash patterns. If you have confidence use a ditsy floral alongside a strong geometric. Use a point of reference or small detail to link the two to form a cohesive scheme.
Above all - have fun with it.
